Castlemaine Q&A Forum
‘The standard you walk past is the standard you accept’ – Lt General David Morrison.
John Hattie spoke at the 2014 ACEL conference about the danger of ‘coasting’ schools. That is, schools that have high achievement levels yet low relative growth. Educators can’t help but reflect upon their own schools when confronted with this concept. This is a conversation worth having! We often argue the quality of Australian Education. Given the demographics of our population, the size of our country and the complex nature of our education sectors, how are we really performing.
What is a coasting school or a coasting system? Is coasting related to high expectations or high standards? Can only high ICSEA schools coast? How do you measure coasting? Do we recognise and reward schools that aren’t coasting? What do are we doing if schools are coasting? What questions will you want answered on the night?
